Windows Server 2016 Datacenter: Free Download & Activation Guide

Windows Server 2016 Datacenter is Microsoft’s top-tier server edition, built for heavily virtualised and software-defined data centres. This guide shows you how to download, install and activate Windows Server 2016 Datacenter step by step, including how to convert the free evaluation version to a fully licensed one, activate Hyper-V guest VMs automatically, and fix the most common activation errors.

Important: Windows Server 2016 reaches the end of extended support on 12 January 2027. After that date it will no longer receive security updates. If you are building a new server, consider Windows Server 2022 instead.

What you need before you start

• A genuine Windows Server 2016 Datacenter product key (25 characters). Get a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter key here if you don’t have one.
• A USB flash drive (8 GB or larger) or a DVD, or a virtual machine host such as Hyper-V or VMware.
• Administrator access to the server.
• A backup of any existing data on the target disk.

Windows Server 2016 Datacenter system requirements

These are minimums. For a production server running roles or virtual machines, plan for considerably more RAM and storage.

Datacenter vs Standard: which edition do you need?

Both editions share the same core features. Datacenter adds the following:

• Unlimited virtual machines (Standard licenses 2 VMs per fully licensed host).
• Storage Spaces Direct and Storage Replica.
• Shielded virtual machines and Host Guardian Service.
• Software-defined networking (Network Controller).
• Automatic Virtual Machine Activation (AVMA) for guest VMs — see below.

If you only need a file, print, or domain server with one or two VMs, Windows Server 2016 Standard is usually enough. If you’re deploying Remote Desktop Services for multiple users on a Datacenter host, you’ll also need RDS CALs, such as a User CAL for Windows Server 2016 RDS or a Device CAL for Windows Server 2016 RDS.

Step 1: Download the Windows Server 2016 ISO

1. Go to the Microsoft Evaluation Center.
2. Fill in the short registration form.
3. Choose your language and download the 64-bit ISO.

This ISO installs the evaluation edition, which runs for 180 days. You will convert it to the full version with your product key in Step 4.

Step 2: Create bootable installation media

• USB: use a tool such as Rufus to write the ISO to a USB drive. Select GPT for UEFI systems or MBR for legacy BIOS.
• DVD: right-click the ISO in Windows and choose Burn disc image.
• Virtual machine: attach the ISO directly to the VM’s virtual DVD drive.

Step 3: Install Windows Server 2016 Datacenter

1. Boot the server from the USB drive or DVD. Change the boot order in BIOS/UEFI if needed.
2. Select your language, time and keyboard settings, then click Next and Install now.
3. Choose Windows Server 2016 Datacenter (Desktop Experience) if you want a graphical interface. The option without “Desktop Experience” installs Server Core, which is command-line only.
4. Accept the license terms and select Custom: Install Windows only.
5. Select the target disk or partition and click Next. The server restarts several times during installation.
6. Set a strong password for the built-in Administrator account and sign in.

Step 4: Activate Windows Server 2016 Datacenter

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and check which edition is installed:

DISM /online /Get-CurrentEdition

If it shows ServerDatacenterEval (evaluation version)

Convert it to the full version with your product key:

DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula

Replace the X’s with your key and restart when prompted. The conversion may take a few minutes and can require two restarts.

Note: the evaluation version cannot be converted while the server is a domain controller. Demote it first, convert, then promote it again.

If it shows ServerDatacenter (full version)

Install and activate your key with these commands:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

Confirm activation

slmgr /xpr

A message saying “The machine is permanently activated” means you are done. You can also check under Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

Activate Hyper-V guest VMs automatically with AVMA

If you’re running Hyper-V on a fully activated Windows Server 2016 Datacenter host, you don’t have to activate every guest VM by hand. Automatic Virtual Machine Activation (AVMA) binds each guest’s activation to the licensed host and activates it automatically when it starts up — useful for remote sites, disconnected environments, and hosts with many VMs.

To use AVMA:

1. Confirm the Hyper-V host is running an activated copy of Windows Server 2016 Datacenter with the Hyper-V role installed.
2. Install Windows Server on the guest VM as normal.
3. Inside the guest, open an administrative command prompt and run slmgr /ipk <AVMA_key>, using the official AVMA key for the guest’s edition from Microsoft’s AVMA documentation.
4. The guest activates automatically and re-activates on its own if it’s moved to another activated host running a compatible version.

AVMA only works with Hyper-V — it does not apply to VMs running on other virtualisation platforms.

Fixing common activation errors

• 0xC004F050: the product key is invalid. Check for typos and make sure the key is for Datacenter, not Standard.
• 0xC004F069: you are trying to use slmgr on the evaluation edition. Use the DISM command above to convert it first.
• 0x8007232B: Windows is looking for a KMS server. Install your retail key with slmgr /ipk and run slmgr /ato again.
• No internet access: run slui 4 to activate by phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Windows Server 2016 ISO free to download?

Yes. Microsoft provides the evaluation ISO free of charge. You only need a product key to activate it beyond the 180-day trial.

Can I upgrade the evaluation version without reinstalling?

Yes. The DISM /Set-Edition command in Step 4 converts the evaluation edition to the full edition and keeps your settings, roles and data.

How long is the Windows Server 2016 evaluation period?

180 days. After that the server shuts down every hour until it is activated.

Can I use a Standard key on Datacenter?

No. The product key must match the installed edition.

What is AVMA and do I need it?

AVMA (Automatic Virtual Machine Activation) is a Datacenter-only feature that activates Hyper-V guest VMs automatically from an activated host. It’s optional — useful if you manage many VMs or remote/disconnected hosts, but not required for a single server.

Can I activate with a KMS key instead of a retail key?

Yes, if your organisation runs a KMS host for volume licensing. Use the KMS client key for your edition instead of a retail key, then run slmgr /ato as normal.
