Project 2021 End of Support: What Happens After October 13, 2026

Project 2021 end of support guide

Published: November 3, 2026 | Updated: November 3, 2026

Project 2021 end of support arrived on October 13, 2026, and it applies to both the retail editions and the volume-licensed Project 2021 (LTSC). That date ended Microsoft’s servicing commitment, not the software itself. Your schedules, Gantt charts and resource sheets did not vanish overnight, and Project 2021 still opens on the morning after.

The real questions are more practical. Is Project 2021 still safe to use? Can it still connect to Project Online or SharePoint? Does Project 2019 have any time left? And if you upgrade, do you need Professional, or is Standard enough?

This guide explains what Project 2021 end of support changes, which Project versions are still supported, how to check what you have installed, and how to move to Project 2024 without breaking a live schedule.

Project 2021 End of Support: Quick Answer

Here is the current position as of November 2026:

  • Project 2021 Standard and Professional (retail) retired on October 13, 2026 under the Modern Lifecycle Policy.
  • Project 2021 (LTSC), the volume-licensed edition, reached end of support on the same day under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
  • Microsoft no longer ships security fixes or bug fixes for either Project 2021 channel.
  • Supported connections from Project 2021 to Microsoft 365 services ended in October 2026.
  • Project 2016 and Project 2019 already reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
  • Project Server 2016 and Project Server 2019 reached end of support on July 14, 2026.
  • Project 2024 (Standard and Professional) is supported until October 9, 2029.

In short, after Project 2021 end of support the software still runs, but it is now unserviced software, so the risk grows the longer it stays on a connected business PC.

Is Project 2021 Still Supported?

No. Project 2021 end of support covers every edition, so all copies are out of support as of October 13, 2026, whether you bought it as a retail product or deployed it through volume licensing.

Microsoft’s official Project 2021 lifecycle page lists a start date of October 5, 2021 and a retirement date in October 2026 for the Professional and Standard editions. Microsoft’s list of products ending support in 2026 shows both Project 2021 and Project 2021 (LTSC) on October 13, 2026.

Product Lifecycle policy Start date End of support
Project 2021 Standard and Professional (retail) Modern Lifecycle Policy October 5, 2021 October 13, 2026
Project 2021 (LTSC), volume licensed Fixed Lifecycle Policy Volume release, 2021 October 13, 2026
Project 2024 Standard and Professional Listed on Microsoft’s Project 2024 lifecycle page October 1, 2024 October 9, 2029

Two lifecycle terms are worth defining:

  • Modern Lifecycle Policy: the product is supported while it is kept current, until a single published retirement date.
  • Fixed Lifecycle Policy: support runs to a fixed end date announced at release, with no rolling extensions.

Neither policy changes the Project 2021 end of support outcome. Both Project 2021 channels stopped receiving servicing on the same day, and Microsoft has not announced a paid extended security program for Project 2021.

Project 2021 End of Support and Other Project Dates by Version

If you manage more than one PC, you may have several Project versions in the building. This table lists the versions most offices still run, newest first:

Version Channel End-of-support date Current status
Project 2024 Retail and volume October 9, 2029 Supported
Project 2021 Retail October 13, 2026 Retired
Project 2021 (LTSC) Volume October 13, 2026 Out of support
Project Server 2019 On-premises server July 14, 2026 Out of support
Project Server 2016 On-premises server July 14, 2026 Out of support
Project 2019 Retail and volume October 14, 2025 Out of support
Project 2016 Retail and volume October 14, 2025 Out of support

Project 2024 is now the only perpetual desktop version of Microsoft Project that is still supported.

Why Did Project 2021 End of Support Happen So Soon?

Project 2021 end of support came after a five-year life, which is shorter than older versions such as Project 2016. That is not a surprise or a penalty; it simply matches the shorter support windows Microsoft now uses for its one-time-purchase Office family.

Project 2021 also retired on exactly the same day as Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021 and Visio 2021. If your Office suite and Project were bought together, they went out of support together. For the Office side of the story, read our guide to Office 2021 End of Support.

What About Project 2021 (LTSC)?

Project 2021 (LTSC) is the volume-licensed build that organizations deploy for a fixed feature set. LTSC stands for Long Term Servicing Channel, which means it receives security fixes but no new features during its support life.

Project 2021 end of support for the LTSC build is also October 13, 2026. A volume license does not buy extra time, so admins should treat retail and LTSC copies of Project 2021 the same way in their upgrade plans.

Are Project 2019 and Project 2016 Still Supported?

No. Both reached end of support on October 14, 2025, a year before Project 2021. If any PC still runs either version, it has already missed a full year of security servicing.

Those machines deserve the first place in your upgrade queue, ahead of anything affected by Project 2021 end of support. If you still maintain an older installation for archived files, our Project 2016 Professional installation guide covers that version, but it is not a sensible choice for new work.

Does Project 2021 End of Support Affect Project Server?

Indirectly. Project 2021 end of support is a desktop event, while Project Server is a separate on-premises product with its own lifecycle, and Microsoft lists Project Server 2016 and Project Server 2019 as reaching end of support on July 14, 2026.

If your organization connects Project Professional to an on-premises Project Server, both ends of that connection may now be unsupported. That is a server migration decision as much as a desktop one, so involve an experienced SharePoint or Project Server administrator before changing anything in production.

Can Project 2021 Still Connect to Microsoft 365 Services?

Not as a supported configuration. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 services connectivity page lists Project Professional 2021 and Project Standard 2021 as supported for connecting to Microsoft 365 services until October 2026. Project Professional 2024 and Project Standard 2024 are listed until October 2029.

Microsoft also notes that older versions might still connect, but that the connection is not supported. In practice, that means it may work today and fail after a service change, with no fix coming for the old client.

Does End of Support Mean Project 2021 Will Stop Working?

Usually not. Project 2021 end of support does not uninstall the app, lock your files or demand a new key. Your .mpp project files open as they did before, and an activated license stays activated.

What stops is Microsoft’s side of the arrangement:

  • No new security updates
  • No non-security bug fixes
  • No Microsoft technical support for Project 2021 issues
  • No supported connectivity to Microsoft 365 services
  • Less testing against future Windows releases

Project files are rarely the target of attacks, but files do travel by email, and a desktop app that opens attachments is part of your security surface. An unpatched Project install is a little like a side door left on the latch: nobody may notice for a while, but it is not a door you want to explain later.

Remember that other components have their own lifecycles. Windows, your Office suite and any Project Server or SharePoint environment each follow separate dates, so check them separately.

How to Check Your Project Version

Before you plan around Project 2021 end of support, confirm exactly what each PC is running:

  1. Open Microsoft Project.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Look under Product Information for the product name, such as Project Professional 2021 or Project Standard 2021.
  4. Select About Project to see the full version and build number, and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Note the edition (Standard or Professional) and the bitness for each PC in your inventory.

If the product name says Project 2021 in any form, that copy is now covered by Project 2021 end of support. If it shows a subscription product instead, it follows the Microsoft 365 servicing model, not the 2021 dates.

How to Update Project 2021 Before You Upgrade

Installing the final updates will not extend support, but it leaves the last released build in place while you plan the move:

  1. Open Project and go to File > Account.
  2. Select Update Options > Update Now.
  3. Close Project when prompted and let the update finish.
  4. Reopen Project and confirm the build number has changed.
  5. For managed LTSC deployments, confirm your update source delivered the final build.

Before you move a team to a new version, test these components first:

  • Custom templates and enterprise fields
  • VBA macros and add-ins
  • Links to Excel workbooks or SharePoint task lists
  • Shared resource pools and master projects
  • Printed reports and exported PDFs
  • Connections to Project Server or other line-of-business tools

For organizations, start with a small pilot group of two or three planners who use the most complex schedules. If their files survive a week in the new version, the rest of the rollout becomes much calmer.

Should You Stay on Project 2021 or Upgrade to Project 2024?

Not every Project 2021 user needs to buy something this week just because of Project 2021 end of support. The right answer depends on how the PC is used and what it connects to.

Stay with Project 2021 for now when:

  • The PC is offline or isolated from email and the internet
  • You only open archived schedules for reference
  • You are finishing a project that ends within weeks
  • A replacement is already scheduled and budgeted
  • You do not rely on Microsoft 365 or Project Server connections

Consider Project 2024 when:

  • The PC is used for daily work and receives email attachments
  • You share schedules with clients or other teams
  • You connect to SharePoint, Microsoft 365 or other Microsoft services
  • Your organization has security or compliance requirements
  • You are buying or rebuilding a PC anyway
  • You want support coverage that runs to 2029

Project 2024 is not automatically better for every reader simply because it is newer, and Project 2021 end of support alone does not make Professional necessary. Its main advantage for most Project 2021 users is a supported lifecycle, not a dramatic change in how scheduling works.

Project 2024 Standard or Professional: Which Edition Do You Need?

The version and the edition are separate decisions. Version is the release year (2021 or 2024), while edition is the feature tier (Standard or Professional). Upgrading the version does not mean you must also move up an edition.

Capability Project Standard Project Professional
Gantt charts, timelines and baselines Yes Yes
Built-in reports and templates Yes Yes
Team Planner resource view No Yes
Inactive tasks for what-if planning No Yes
Project Server and Project Online connectivity No Yes
Best fit Individual planners and small teams Resource-heavy teams and connected environments

A freelancer or small business running one schedule at a time is usually well served by Standard. You do not need Professional simply because it is the bigger box; choose it when you manage shared resources or connect to a Project Server environment.

If you are currently on Project Professional 2021, the matching path is Professional 2024. If you are on Standard 2021 and have never missed Team Planner, Standard 2024 is the like-for-like replacement.

Bcdkey Options for Replacing Project 2021

When you are ready to act on Project 2021 end of support, these Project 2024 licenses match the most common situations:

  • Project 2024 Standard Bind Key: Project Standard 2024 for one Windows PC, redeemed to your Microsoft account. Best for individual planners.
  • Microsoft Project 2024 Pro Bind Key: Project Professional 2024 for one Windows PC, linked to your Microsoft account, with Team Planner and server connectivity.
  • Microsoft Project 2024 Pro LTSC 1PC: the volume-channel build of Project Professional 2024 for one PC, installed with the Bcdkey installer and activated with a product key, with no Microsoft account binding.

All of these are Windows licenses for one PC each. Microsoft Project has no native macOS desktop version, so Mac users need a Windows environment or a web-based alternative. Adding more planners means adding more licenses.

Bcdkey still lists Microsoft Project 2021 Professional, but it now sits outside Microsoft support. It only makes sense for a narrow case, such as matching an isolated legacy setup, and it is not a good choice for new installations. You can browse every edition in the Microsoft Project category.

How to Upgrade Safely After Project 2021 End of Support

An upgrade is mostly about protecting your files and settings. These steps keep it predictable:

  1. Record the edition, bitness and build of each Project 2021 install.
  2. Back up your .mpp files, templates and the Global.MPT file that stores custom views and macros.
  3. Export a copy of each active schedule to a safe location.
  4. Choose the matching Project 2024 edition and the same bitness as your Office suite.
  5. Uninstall Project 2021 from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  6. Install Project 2024 using the method for your license type.
  7. Activate Project 2024 and confirm the product name under File > Account.
  8. Open your most complex schedules and check calculations, custom fields and reports.
  9. Re-test macros, add-ins and links to Excel or SharePoint.
  10. Keep the Project 2021 backups until every active project has been validated.

After Project 2021 end of support, plan to replace Project 2021 rather than run both versions on one PC. Mixing Click-to-Run versions of the same product is a common source of installation errors, and Project and Office should also share the same bitness.

For Office suite installation steps, see Bcdkey’s guide on How to Download, Install and Activate Office 2024 Professional Plus, which follows a similar process to the LTSC Project build. Need to activate by phone? Use the Bcdkey Get Confirmation ID tool, and read our Confirmation ID explainer if the Installation ID and Confirmation ID terms are new to you.

Do You Need a New Product Key for Project 2024?

Yes. Project 2021 end of support does not convert your old key, and a Project 2021 key does not activate Project 2024, and a Standard key does not activate Professional. The key must match both the version and the edition you install.

If you already bought a Project license from Bcdkey and cannot find the key, check My Account. For activation problems, you can open a support ticket.

What About a Subscription Instead?

Some teams use Project 2021 end of support as a reason to compare one-time licenses with subscription plans. Subscriptions stay current automatically, while a perpetual license like Project 2024 is paid once and supported until its fixed date.

Neither model is right for everyone. For a broader look at that trade-off on the Office side, read our guide Is There a Lifetime Microsoft 365 Key?, which explains how subscriptions and perpetual licenses differ.

Recommended Action by Installed Version

Use this table to decide how Project 2021 end of support affects each PC:

Installed version Recommended action
Project 2016 or Project 2019 Upgrade first; these have been out of support since October 14, 2025
Project 2021 Standard Move to Project 2024 Standard on daily-use PCs
Project 2021 Professional Move to Project 2024 Professional, especially if you use Team Planner or server connectivity
Project 2021 (LTSC) Plan a volume or LTSC replacement and pilot it with a small group
Project 2021 on an offline PC Keep it isolated, avoid opening email attachments, and schedule a replacement
Project Professional connected to Project Server 2016 or 2019 Plan the server and desktop migration together with an experienced administrator
Project 2024 No action needed; keep it updated until October 9, 2029

If you also run Visio alongside Project, our comparison of Visio Standard vs Professional covers the same edition decision for diagrams.

Final Thoughts

Project 2021 end of support is not really about your schedules disappearing. It is about whether the software you plan your work in still receives fixes from Microsoft.

Since the Project 2021 end of support date of October 13, 2026, both retail Project 2021 and Project 2021 (LTSC) have been out of support. The software still opens, but it no longer receives security updates or supported Microsoft 365 connectivity.

For most readers, the simplest option is to move to the same edition of Project 2024, which Microsoft supports until October 9, 2029. Organizations with Project Server or large resource pools should treat it as a planned migration with a pilot group, not a quick reinstall.

Start by checking File > Account on every PC that runs Project, and back up Global.MPT before you touch anything. When you are ready to choose an edition, compare the Project 2024 licenses in Bcdkey’s Microsoft Project range.
