Office 2019 End of Support: What Happens After October 14, 2025

Office 2019 end of support guide

Published: October 26, 2026 | Updated: October 26, 2026

Office 2019 end of support arrived on October 14, 2025, and it did not switch anything off. Your copy of Word, Excel or Outlook 2019 still opens files, saves documents and sends email. What ended is Microsoft’s commitment to fix it: no more security patches, bug fixes or technical support for newly found problems.

Office 2016 end of support fell on the same day, while Office 2019 for Mac had already ended on October 10, 2023. So the real questions are practical ones. Is it safe to keep using Office 2019 a year later? Does Outlook 2019 still connect to Microsoft 365? Should you move to Office 2024, Office LTSC 2024 or a Microsoft 365 subscription, and will you need a new product key?

This guide explains what the Office 2019 end of support date changed, which versions and channels are affected, how to check what you have, and how to choose and carry out a sensible upgrade.

Office 2019 End of Support: Quick Answer

Here is the current position as of October 2026:

  • Office 2019 for Windows (Home & Student, Home & Business, Professional, Standard, Professional Plus) reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
  • Office 2016 for Windows ended on the same date.
  • Project 2016, Project 2019, Visio 2016 and Visio 2019 also ended on October 14, 2025.
  • Office 2019 for Mac ended earlier, on October 10, 2023; Office 2016 for Mac ended on October 13, 2020.
  • Microsoft no longer supports Office 2016 or Office 2019 connecting to Microsoft 365 services, a status that began on October 10, 2023.
  • Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 followed on October 13, 2026.
  • Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 are supported until October 9, 2029.

In short, the apps keep working after the Office 2019 end of support date, but every month without patches adds risk, especially for anyone who opens email attachments from strangers.

Is Office 2019 Still Supported?

No. The Office 2019 end of support date has passed. Office 2019 follows Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy, which means a product gets a set period of mainstream support followed by a set period of extended support, and then it stops.

Product Release date Mainstream support ended Extended support ended
Office 2019 September 24, 2018 October 10, 2023 October 14, 2025
Office 2016 September 22, 2015 October 13, 2020 October 14, 2025

The two support phases mean different things:

  • Mainstream support: security fixes, non-security fixes and occasional improvements.
  • Extended support: security fixes only.
  • After extended support: no fixes and no Microsoft technical help.

Microsoft’s official Office 2019 lifecycle page lists these dates and the editions they cover. The page shows the end time in Pacific Time, so the cutoff technically fell in the early hours of October 15, 2025 UTC.

Office 2019 End of Support and Other Office Dates by Version

The table below lists the Office releases most people still have installed, newest first:

Version Channel End-of-support date Current status
Office 2024 / Office LTSC 2024 Retail and volume (LTSC) October 9, 2029 Supported
Office 2021 / Office LTSC 2021 Retail and volume (LTSC) October 13, 2026 Ended
Office 2019 Retail and volume October 14, 2025 Ended
Office 2016 Retail and volume October 14, 2025 Ended
Office 2019 for Mac Retail October 10, 2023 Ended
Office 2016 for Mac Retail October 13, 2020 Ended
Microsoft 365 Apps Subscription Ongoing while you stay current Supported

If your Office has a year of 2021 or earlier in its name, it no longer receives security updates.

Office 2021 has its own story, including what changed on October 13, 2026. For that version, read our guide to Office 2021 End of Support.

What Does Office 2019 End of Support Mean for Retail Versions?

Retail Office 2019 covers the boxed or digital editions sold to individuals and small businesses: Home & Student 2019, Home & Business 2019 and Professional 2019. These are perpetual licenses, meaning you paid once and own the right to use that version indefinitely.

End of support does not cancel that right. The license stays valid, activation still works, and your installed apps keep running. What you lose is the steady flow of security fixes that kept those apps safe against newly discovered attacks.

Microsoft’s support article on the end of support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 puts it plainly: the apps may continue to function, but you may face security risks, and performance and reliability may decline over time.

What About Volume Licensed Office Professional Plus 2019?

Volume licensed Office 2019, usually Office Standard 2019 or Office Professional Plus 2019, was built for organizations and installed through the Office Deployment Tool rather than the consumer installer. It shows as version 1808 in the About screen.

The Office 2019 end of support date for volume editions is the same: October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s guidance for organizations is to move to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, or, where a subscription is not possible, to Office LTSC 2024, the current volume release.

Microsoft is under no obligation to release further fixes for Office 2019, so plan as though none will arrive. Hoping for a stray patch is not much of a security strategy.

Does Outlook 2019 Still Work with Microsoft 365?

Usually, yes, but it is unsupported, and the Office 2019 end of support date did not change that. Microsoft states that support for connecting Office 2016 and Office 2019 to Microsoft 365 services ended on October 10, 2023.

Microsoft also notes that older versions may still be able to connect, but that the connection is not supported. Over time you may see missing features, sign-in prompts or reliability problems, because Microsoft no longer tests service changes against these versions.

If your business relies on Outlook 2019 with Exchange Online, treat this as the most pressing reason to plan an upgrade. Microsoft’s article on Office versions and connectivity to Microsoft 365 services lists which versions are supported and until when.

What Happened to Office 2019 for Mac?

The Office 2019 end of support date for Mac was October 10, 2023, two years before the Windows version. It no longer receives security updates, and Microsoft does not support it for Microsoft 365 connections.

Newer versions of macOS may also introduce compatibility problems that Microsoft will not fix for Office 2019. For Mac users, the realistic paths are Office Home & Business 2024, Office Home 2024 or a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Does Office 2019 End of Support Mean Office Will Stop Working?

Usually not. After the Office 2019 end of support date, the apps still open, edit and save files much as they did on October 13, 2025. Office will not delete your documents or lock you out.

Here is what stops after the end-of-support date:

  • Security updates for newly reported vulnerabilities
  • Bug fixes and quality updates
  • Microsoft phone and chat technical support
  • Updates to Microsoft’s online help content for these versions
  • Supported connections to Microsoft 365 services

Remember that other components have their own lifecycles. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, too, so a PC running both Windows 10 and Office 2019 may be unpatched in two places at once. For the Windows side of the picture, see our guide to the Windows 10 ESU End Date.

IMPORTANT: Office documents are a common way to deliver malware. An unpatched Office installation is most exposed when you open files from email, downloads or shared drives you do not control.

How to Check Your Office Version

Before deciding anything, confirm exactly what you have installed. On Windows:

  1. Open Word, Excel or any other Office app.
  2. Go to File → Account (in Outlook, File → Office Account).
  3. Read the product name under Product Information, for example “Office Professional Plus 2019” or “Office Home and Business 2016”.
  4. Select About Word (or the matching app) to see the version and build number.

On a Mac:

  1. Open Word.
  2. Select Word → About Microsoft Word from the menu bar.
  3. Note the version and the license shown, such as “Office 2019 for Mac” or “Microsoft 365 Subscription”.

If the product name says Microsoft 365, you are on the subscription and the Office 2019 end of support does not apply to you.

How to Upgrade Safely After Office 2019 End of Support

Moving off Office 2019 is simpler than a Windows upgrade, but a little preparation still saves time. Follow these steps:

  1. Confirm your current version and edition using the steps above.
  2. Choose the replacement edition that matches the apps you actually use.
  3. Back up your documents, templates and custom dictionaries.
  4. In Outlook, note your account settings and back up any local PST data files.
  5. Uninstall Office 2019 through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  6. Restart the PC.
  7. Install the new version from the official installer for your license.
  8. Activate with your new product key.
  9. Open a sample of important files, add-ins and macros to confirm they work.

Before moving a whole team, test these components first:

  • Excel macros and VBA projects
  • Third-party add-ins for accounting, CRM or document management
  • Access databases and linked tables
  • Mail merges and templates with custom fields
  • Outlook profiles and shared mailboxes

For organizations, upgrade a small pilot group first and keep the old installer and license details until that group has worked normally for a week or two. It is much easier to discover an incompatible add-in on five PCs than on fifty.

Need step-by-step installation help for the volume edition? See Bcdkey’s guide on How to Download, Install and Activate Office 2024 Professional Plus, which uses the Bcdkey Download Center installer.

Should You Stay on Office 2019 or Upgrade?

Not everyone needs to upgrade on the day after Office 2019 end of support, but almost everyone should have a plan. Stay with Office 2019 for now when:

  • The PC is offline or isolated from email and the internet
  • You only open files you create yourself
  • A specialist add-in has not yet been certified for a newer version
  • The machine is due for replacement within a few months

Consider Office 2024 or Office LTSC 2024 when:

  • You open email attachments and downloaded files every day
  • You prefer a one-time purchase over a subscription
  • You want security updates through October 9, 2029
  • You are already replacing or upgrading the PC to Windows 11

Consider Microsoft 365 when:

  • Your organization uses Exchange Online, SharePoint or Teams heavily
  • You want the newest features as soon as Microsoft releases them
  • You need Office on several devices, including phones and tablets

Moving to Office 2021 after Office 2019 end of support is not a good choice now, because its support also ended on October 13, 2026. Newer is not automatically better, but in this case the older alternative is already out of support.

Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365 After Office 2019 End of Support

Office 2024 and Microsoft 365 solve the same problem in different ways. One is a perpetual license for a fixed version; the other is a subscription that always stays on the latest version.

Factor Office 2024 / Office LTSC 2024 Microsoft 365
Payment model One-time purchase Monthly or yearly subscription
Feature updates No new features after release Ongoing new features
Security updates Until October 9, 2029 As long as the subscription is active and current
Supported connection to Microsoft 365 services Until October 9, 2029 Ongoing
Cloud storage Not included Included in most plans
Best fit Stable desktops, offline work, budget certainty Cloud-heavy teams and multi-device users

A perpetual license is not a “lifetime” subscription, and the two terms are often confused. Bcdkey’s explainer Is There a Lifetime Microsoft 365 Key? clears up that distinction.

Which Office 2024 Edition Replaces Your Office 2019 Edition?

Version and edition are two separate choices when you plan for Office 2019 end of support. The version is the year (2019, 2024), while the edition decides which apps you get. Match the edition first, then move to the newer version.

Your Office 2019 edition Closest Office 2024 replacement Notes
Home & Student 2019 Office Home 2024 Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote
Home & Business 2019 Office Home & Business 2024 Adds Outlook and business-use rights
Office 2019 for Mac Office Home & Business 2024 Available for Mac or Windows PC
Standard 2019 (volume) Office LTSC Standard 2024 Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote
Professional Plus 2019 Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 Adds Access; Publisher is not included in 2024
Project 2019 / Visio 2019 Project 2024 / Visio 2024 Licensed separately from Office

Microsoft confirms that Office LTSC 2024 does not include Publisher. If you rely on Publisher files, plan how you will open or convert them before you retire Office 2019.

Home Users and Students

If you mostly write documents, build spreadsheets and give the occasional presentation, Microsoft Office 2024 Home covers Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. It is a bind key linked to your Microsoft account for one PC and does not include Outlook.

Freelancers and Small Businesses

If you need Outlook or use Office for paid work, Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024 is the natural successor to Home & Business 2019. It covers one Mac or one Windows PC and is bound to your Microsoft account, which also makes it the practical replacement for Office 2019 for Mac.

Power Users and Organizations

If you need Access or want the volume-style LTSC build, Microsoft Office 2024 Professional Plus LTSC activates one Windows PC with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access. It is Windows only, so it is not a replacement for Office on macOS.

For offices with several machines, Microsoft Office 2024 Pro Plus LTSC 20PC uses one key across up to 20 PCs. Larger rollouts may suit the Bcdkey B2B Wholesale Program.

Do You Need a New Product Key?

Yes. An Office 2019 product key only activates Office 2019, and Office 2019 end of support does not change that. Moving to Office 2024 or Office LTSC 2024 requires a key for that version and edition, and the key must match the edition you install.

Your Office 2019 key does not upgrade itself. Your old license remains valid for Office 2019 itself, which can be useful on an offline machine.

Some keys activate by phone rather than online. If yours does, Bcdkey’s guide to activating Office by phone walks through the process, and the Bcdkey Get Confirmation ID tool turns your Installation ID into the Confirmation ID that completes activation.

Recommended Action by Installed Version

Use this table to find your next step after Office 2019 end of support, based on the version you have:

Installed version Recommended action
Office 2016 (any edition) Upgrade to Office 2024, Office LTSC 2024 or Microsoft 365 soon
Office 2019 retail Plan a move to Office Home 2024 or Home & Business 2024
Office Professional Plus 2019 Pilot and deploy Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024
Office 2019 for Mac Move to Office Home & Business 2024 or Microsoft 365
Office 2016 for Mac Upgrade now; it has been unsupported since 2020
Office 2021 / LTSC 2021 Plan an upgrade; support ended October 13, 2026
Office 2024 / LTSC 2024 No action needed; keep updates switched on
Microsoft 365 Apps No action needed; stay on a supported update channel

Final Thoughts

Office 2019 end of support is not really about software that stopped working. It is about software that stopped being looked after.

Since the Office 2019 end of support date of October 14, 2025, Office 2019 and Office 2016 have received no further security fixes, and their Microsoft 365 connections have been unsupported since 2023. The apps still open your files, which is exactly why the change is easy to ignore.

For most home users and small businesses, the simplest option is to move to the matching Office 2024 edition, which is supported until October 9, 2029. Teams that live in Exchange Online, SharePoint and Teams may be better served by Microsoft 365, while an isolated, offline PC can reasonably keep Office 2019 a little longer.

Whatever you choose, check your version this week and write down which edition you actually use. That one note makes the rest of the decision much easier.

When you are ready to choose an edition, compare the Office 2024 range on Bcdkey.

FAQ About Office 2019 End of Support: What Happens After October 14, 2025

When did Office 2019 end of support happen?

October 14, 2025. That was the end of extended support for Office 2019 on Windows, after which Microsoft stopped releasing security fixes, bug fixes and technical support for it.

Can I still use Office 2019 in 2026?

Yes. Office 2019 still installs, activates and runs after Office 2019 end of support, but it no longer receives security updates, so using it for email and downloaded files carries growing risk.

Is Office 2016 still supported?

No. Office 2016 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, the same day as Office 2019, and Office 2016 for Mac ended on October 13, 2020.

Will Outlook 2019 stop connecting to Microsoft 365?

Not necessarily. Microsoft stopped supporting Office 2019 connections to Microsoft 365 services on October 10, 2023, and older versions may still connect, but problems are no longer fixed.

Can I upgrade Office 2019 to Office 2024 with my old key?

No. An Office 2019 key only activates Office 2019, so Office 2024 or Office LTSC 2024 requires its own product key matching the edition you install.

Should I install Office 2021 instead of Office 2024?

Normally, no. Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support on October 13, 2026, while Office 2024 is supported until October 9, 2029.

Do my Office 2019 files work in Office 2024?

Yes. Office 2024 opens and saves the same .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats, although macros and third-party add-ins should be tested before you remove Office 2019.

Are Project 2019 and Visio 2019 affected?

Yes. Project 2019 and Visio 2019 share the Office 2019 end of support date of October 14, 2025, and they are licensed separately, so upgrading Office does not upgrade them.

Does Office 2019 end of support affect Microsoft 365 subscribers?

No. Microsoft 365 Apps keep receiving updates as long as your subscription is active and you stay on a supported update channel.
